PORSCHE 911 BOLDER, WISER, FIERCER

PORSCHE 911

IN THE LAST ISSUE, WE gave you a preview of the next-gen 911 still disguised in prototype wrapping. Here now is the production version. Porsche did not get where it is today by mucking about with the shape of the 911. And with this all-new car, the shape is once again firmly kept free of mocking about. But everything about the shell is new--like the materials, for a start. Much of it is aluminum to bring weight to 45kg below the last one. The wheelbase is 100mm longer. Some of that is given more leg-room to the people at the front, while the rest of the stretch moves the rear wheels aft, to reduce the seesaw effect of the rear-mount lump on handling.

The base Carrera motor shrinks to 3.4 liters from 3.6, but the power is still up a smidge to 350hp. With a PDK dual-clutch gearbox, it will do 0-100kph in 4.6 seconds, and a yet because of an advantage stop-start system plus other measures, the carbon-dioxide emissions figure is asaintly 194g/km. Meanwhile, the Carrera S gets a 3.8-liter engine as before, but tweaked for 400hp and a 4.1-second 0-100kph time. New chassis features include an optional anti-roll system for ultimate lap times, and electric power steering, which we want to feel before we approve. The all-new cabin boasts Panamera switches and a huge range of luxury options. But the layout is still very 911: snug, upright, made for driving.
